Award Show Season

In the entertainment industry, nominations for all the arts & music awards have already begun and the big fancy shows begin in January.

For college football, ESPN aired their College Football Awards Show on Thursday.  Tonight, is the night for the big hardware to be distributed…The Heisman.

I’m a staunch supporter of Toby Gerhart, but the West Coast bias from the voters may be all it takes to prevent him from winning the award he has earned.

Due to the poor showing of Tim Tebow at the end of the season, we have learned that he s now a long shot.  But, please remember that the Heisman Memorial Trophy is awarded “to an individual who deserves designation as the most outstanding college football player in the United States.”  That phrase is very important… “most outstanding” is not the best player on the best team.

Gerhart has amazing numbers, he was the offense for Stanford.  All opponets knew that the ball would go to Gerhart, but game after game he raked up the yards and touchdowns.  There was very little defenses could do to stop him.  He had two performances that weren’t as great, but he always showed up.

The other finalists can’t have the same said for them, as Tim Tebow & Colt McCoy both did not have the type of seaso that got them nominated before, and it seems like Mark Ingram only got into the race at the last minute with all the hype surrounding the Florida/Alabama SEC Championship match-up that was phrophetcized early in the season.  Ndamukong Suh is a great defensive player, but not the best player in all of college football; hopefully the voting committee understands that this is not the year to award the trophy to a defensive player.
