With Roger Federer’s loss today to Tomas Berdych I became more excited about Wimbledon.
I’ve grown old on Federer. His level of consistant winning has rubbed me wrong. I am one who would wish for Andy Roddick to be able to get a few breaks and use his serve to beat Roger, but that was no longer an option a few days ago.
Maybe my affection for Pete Sampras, who grew up in my hometown, outweighs my desire for anyone to come along and beat his Wimbledon record.
Seeing Berdych for the first time late last week, I was pleased. He’s easy on the eyes, but aside from that he is watchable. His game seems very clean and to see him generate a fair amount of success on such a large stage is impressive. Tomas is who I’ll be cheering for Friday to get past the semis and into Sunday’s Wimbledon final.
With the new year upon us, I forgot about the Australian Open. It’s already the 3rd round. As I watch tonight, Andy Roddick is 2 points in a tie break away from the next round.
it’s on ESPN2 right now and looks great in HD.
Update: Andy just beat Lopez to advance to the round of 16 with 29 aces in 4 sets. Roddick did drop the 1st set of the match.
Apparently Richard Gasquet had to kiss and tell… the tennis player blamed making out with a woman in a Miami area nightclub for the “minute” traces that popped him positive for cocaine.
It was determinted by a CAS panel that Richard was “clearly not a cocaine user.” But Francescp Ricci Bitti, ITF president, used the word “dissappointed” when describing the federation’s feelings regarding the court’s ruling.
I think this is one more reason not to make out with strangers.
One day, eventually, I knew it would happen…
I know I don’t have to condone it, but according to People, Andy Roddick is getting married near his home is Austin this weekend.
My affection and attention to Roddick has totally dwindled since his engagement was announced just over a year ago, I will completely admit it. Congrats to the happy couple!
I haven’t watched tennis very much lately, I will admit that. As much as I enjoy the sport, and Andy Roddick, I have not found it absolutly necessary to watch him play. This possibly may be because he is engaged, possibly.
The court temp in Rod Laver Arena got up to 140* during Roddick’s match against Novak Djokovic. Eventually Novak, the defending champ, retired during the fourth set. He also took an injury timeout in the thrid set to cool off. Andy was on his game, minus a few double faults, after the long recess where Novak was rubbed down, ate a energy bar, thought about eating a banana, drank some water, and sat with an ice wrap around his neck. Andy did none of that, instead he took a short rest in his seat, then got back up and went to his end of the court to finish serving.
Well, the win got Andy into the semis where he faces Roger Federer.
Serena Williams won the women’s crown yesterday, but the men’s side of the draw will crown a victor today as Andy Murray takes on Roger Federer in the men’s final.
Typically, this would have wrapped up yesterday but the weather in NYC delayed enough games to force Monday play. Murray beat Rafeal Nadal on Sunday to get himself to his first grand slam final.
Catch it at 5pm est on CBS.
I didn’t watch the British Open…
Ok, actually, I watched a bit of the B.O. on Saturday morning and saw a bit today as Chris Evert was interviewed about her husband, Greg Norman, and prompted to show “her left hand” by the female course reporter du jour.
I really don’t think the size of Chris Evert’s engagement/wedding ring is news… if anything it is borderline obnoxious to have been asked. Chris was suprised to be asked, but complied. She was adorable as she followed Greg throughout the tourney, so sweet to see. It probably is a great match to have a woman who is connected to the mindset of an athlete, as most wives of athletes can never really relate, as they are far from bing an athlete themselves… having a trainer doesn’t count.
As 8-8-08 approaches, the ads on NBC and their bevy of affiliated stations are getting frequent.
Their goal - to showcase some athlete that you, the viewer, will connect with… connect with enough that you check out their profile on-line and even tune in to watch that sport.
The Olympics are addicting to watch. I still remember when it was only on NBC and on tape delay, and you’d have to record your fave event on the VCR if it aired too late to stay up for. With the most hours of Olympic coverage to ever air, NBC is trying to reach almost every American. I think they’ll do it. But, I only want to watch in hi-def… I’m a brat.
So, Greg Norman got divorced from his wife, Laura Andrassy, and paid her out $50 mil… but apparently that was not enough.
Norman now has to pay $30 mil over the next 15 yrs and surrender $20 mil in goods such as homes & jewelry.
BTW, Norman recently got hitched to Chris Evert… apparently the foursome of Chris Evert, her ex-Andy Mill, Andrassy and Norman were vacationing buddies…
